AWI Extension NSW - Winter sheep nutrition update
Winter sheep nutrition historically brings forth a multitude of challenges, and opportunities and this season is no different. Seasonal conditions being widely variable across the state, from excellent, to very wet, and in some areas well below average, and over 30% of the state classified as drought affected, the questions that arise regarding sheep nutrition are varied.
Our July webinar will focus on winter sheep nutrition and how to optimise sheep production.
It doesn’t matter if you are lambing, have marked lambs, are in the lead up to lambing, or a trading or wether operation, this webinar will seek to answer your sheep nutrition questions.
We will be joined by ruminant nutritionist Nicole Logg, The Livestock Coach.
The webinar will discuss the following topics:
Winter sheep nutrition in general – meeting the needs of your livestock with these shorter days, and in the wet or dry.
Winter sheep nutrition and requirements on:
- pastures – both improved and native
- winter grazing crops – cereals, brassicas
The webinar will also discuss the following:
- Winter supplementary feeding – think Vitamin D, Calcium
- Importance of good quality hay in the cold
- Common deficiencies that are seen in winter and how to avoid/manage
- Other grazing headaches such as Nitrate poisoning and how to avoid this in grazing crops following application of N fertiliser.
As always is the case, there will be ample time for questions – and we strongly encourage you to ask ahead of time if that suits. You can send in your questions via email to awiextensionnsw@wool.com before 15 July and we will pass these onto Nicole.
